Amoco Valhall Conceptual Control Room

The space is tight on an offshore oil rig so every square metre counts. These were the conditions for constructing a proposal for a new control room on Amoco's Valhall platform in the North Sea.

The project was a joint venture between Halden VR Centre and the Man-Machine Systems Research division at IFE. The aim was to provide Amoco with a conceptual model of the control room. Five different models where built at different locations on the platform. Each of the models was developed according to guidelines that resulted from a study by IFE, covering everything from physical measures to man-machine interaction. An evaluation was provided of the different proposals, where the pros and cons of each design were discussed.
