As more nuclear installations begin to reach the end of their useful lives, decommissioning projects have become more common, and the technical aspects of the decommissioning process have become better understood. Decommissioning is, however, a challenging task, partly because of the complexity of the structure and partly because parts of the plant are contaminated. Major issues of the decommissioning task include maintaining a high level of security during the dismantling process and maintaining project schedules.
Virtual Reality is an interactive medium that can be useful to support the planning of complex tasks because it enables engineers and others to examine evolving plans from the viewpoint of the end-user, reducing the risk of costly planning-induced operational problems while at the same time improving the quality of the project.
