Control Room Engineering

The development of control room philosophies based on user-centered design principles and task analysis is one of IFE's major areas of human factors research.

Using VR technology and systems developed by Halden VR Centre, experimental control room prototypes can easily be created, which through continuous refinement result in a more successful final design. This flexibility can reduce the time needed for the design process and permits the testing of many variations of a design at relatively low cost.

Ergonomics, human factors, operators and construction engineers can use the same visualisation of a design as a reference for discussion.

Console instruments can be animated, so interactive simulations of interesting control room scenarios can be made for evaluation purposes.

Using the VR technology to design a control room reduces project time, reduces prototyping and maintenance costs, leads to increased quality, reduces risk of design errors, enables designers and operators to become familiar with an environment before it exists physically.
